For me, it's about biting off way more than I can chew and then fucking chewing it. No way in the world I'd make myself ride for 600 km in less than 40 hours (also in the rain) if it wasn't for the time limit and the checkpoints. It's the best game there is, a role-playing game with well defined goals where your character is developing into a badass, you slowly refine your equpiment and meet riders who become your guild that you attack quests with. It's kind of paradoxical how totally free I feel while riding a fixed route in a fixed amount of time. I die and am reborn tens of times, I can feel like total shit with the stupidest hobby and one mountain pass or two bananas later I'm flying, invincible. You help your bros fix their shit and they provide you with a magnesium tablet, you ride together after that and after a few brevets you have a unique bond and some shared war stories that non-audax folk just don't get. And don't get me started on the massive ones like PBP - riding all night past rivers of bikes, singing Okuru kotoba with Japanese businessmen, helping girls from India fix their shitty plastic pedals, you get the feeling that the entire world is riding with you on that track. And when you make it and sit down, the feeling of total satisfaction lasts for days.
