The citizens of Zurich, Switzerland voted for a public initiative, demanding 50km of car free cycling routes built in the city within 10 years. The result was 70.5% YES vs 29.5% NO, the participation was the highest in 50 years. Right wing conservatives and the liberal democrats were staunchly against it, fearing this will interrupt motorized traffic and especially hated the idea that parking spaces get turned into cycling lanes.
Zurich is notorious for having some of the worst cycling infrastructure in Switzerland, despite citizens demanding changes for a long time and having voted so several times before.
