The truth is, the NIMBYs there have never thought for 5 minutes about housing and are just taking a knee-jerk reaction.
Constitutionally, you have no right to tell someone they can't build an apartment building over some shitty parking lot, just because you don't want them to. But NIMBYs will invent really stupid reasons anyway (even though they don't own the parking lot).
But I will say not all of the NIMBYs are conservative homeowners; some of them are leftists who think "Oh, they're gonna build expensive apartments! That'll raise housing prices even more!" They just don't understand that housing's always going to be expensive as long as there is a shortage this bad, and the reasons we have a shortage are really fucking stupid.
