I would say there's a huge gap between a 30+ year old vintage road bike and something brand new in the $650 range. Beyond $650 IS diminishing returns. I've ridden a coworkers bike with a wheelset that cost more then my entire bike, gear, and everything bicycle related I've ever purchased in my lifetime. Carbon wheels are not a world of difference, but noticeable.
When you factor in that's the machine is human powered, yeah it makes bicycles look like a joke. Yeah I know bike wheels have a fuckton of labor, but when custom sick car wheels cost less, and have MORE PRECISION, and built to handle thousands of pounds of force, more material and craftsmanship... Yeah I wanna hear your guus' responses.
It's like arguing why a Rolex tells time better than a Casio.
