Even methadone clinics and pain doctors fuck over their patients regularly and cause them to end up in withdrawal for protracted periods of time, and the prices aren't much better than what they can find on the street. Furthermore the demonization of drug use creates a self fulfilling prophecy of abusive drug use and addicts have a hard time finding mentours to teach them how to maintain their body healthily.
Most addicts really aren't that different from diabetics or HIV patients that require an extra chemical to survive. In fact you require water and food so they are not much different than you. Imagine if you had to rob and steal to get artificially expensive water and food. You would exhibit behavior and traits that model drug addiction.
There is a huge portion of addicts that maintain their addictions and dont let anyone else know about it because of the stigma and dogma. Everyday you pass by drug addicts without knowing. At the grocery store the person behind the counter might be a drug addict but you will never know because the functional addicts dont tell a soul. And because they hide their addition they cant teach other addicts struggling how they figured out how to deal with their own addiction.
