In both Houston and LA, the mass transit is focused on connecting multiple dense cores that are spread throughout the area, whereas Chicago and NYC tend to have a single large dense core where most of the transit is focused. Unlike LA however, Houston's multiple dense cores are near enough to each other that we'll likely see them merge within the next few decades.
