Narrow gauge railways were built for a need that is better solved with other options. Narrow gauge was laid where there was a need for transportation of some sort, but cutting, grading, and laying a full-sized railway, even light rail, would have been cost-prohibitive. That situation is as easily or better handled by using trucks now. Where even a 2-ft. railway needs some sort of grading and right-of-way, a lot of off-road trucks don't even need established paths to get from A to B, fully loaded.
