Though really you'd want to extend it all the way to Redwood City, considering that they've been wanting a streetcar to a new public ferry terminal for the longest time. This is why they're so gung ho about doing a four-track station and Dumbarton. But at that point, why not just rebuild Muni's 40 line into San Mateo, and extend it through Carlmont into RWC. This would allow Caltrain to eliminate most of their local stop trains (it's not like any of the bedroom communities outside of Bayshore, SM and RWC care), and thus increase the amount of limited stop trains.
This is more of a local problem though since VTA and Samtrans both know they need light rail on 82, but there's not enough political support yet. This will likely be forced eventually though, once the mainline is all completed since that (and BART's SV extension) is presently soaking up all the money.
