I really like the Roger Musson style truing stand. He has plans for it in his book, and there's pics of user builds on various forums.
I've seen them in plywood, mdf, oak, etc. Uses off the shelf hardware, maybe plastic for the 'indicator tips', maybe metal plates for the 'axle rests'.
Cheap to build, easy to use. I get good results with mine.
