>>1119238I see this every time I go into Bristol, lovely thing and it costs just 20p to cross it. One of the earliest suspension bridges and the original design actually didn't have the brick steps on each side of the river and would have been longer. It only got changed due to the investors not believing the longer span could be physically possible.
It was built so high up because Bristol was an active port when it was built, despite being 10 miles inland. All traffic went through the avon gorge and round some pretty tight bends until ships just got too big to fit in the river.
