>>1217049Get some nice supple tyres like compass that are wide and comfy, they're also fast and especially so if you dial in your pressures properly (pic is a half decent guide)
Also, get your wheel and BB bearings cleaned and properly repacked with good EP2/3 grease and keep your driveline cleaned and properly lubricated and consider replacing shift and brake cables if they're tired (super easy to do on a downtube shifter bike).
Doing these things will squeeze some more speed from your bike, which has nothing wrong with it and is only marginally slower than a carbon race bike and probably much more comfy to ride. The next step is probably going to be getting a bike fit, clipless pedals, and well fitting aero clothes and helmet.
The biggest gains in speed come from you: drop some body weight with better diet and build yourself a solid foundation of base fitness and build from that by doing the occasional hard ride, challenging climb, or some intervals.
If you really wanna start getting gud from there, you'll want to look into periodization training, recovery disciplines, and getting rehab/prehab from physio and chiro practitioners etc. The sky's the limit really.
If there's one piece of advice i could give you it's this: forget the carbon race machine for now, just ride more and get lots of miles in your legs, hard or easy, just get out there and ride as much as you can.
