I basically ignore all pedestrian rules, because they are intended for drivers to see you so that they stop in time (which they don't) not to keep you safe. And instead what I do is use basic physics and real time threat management whenever crossing the street. For example, I will walk across the road when I can clearly see or hear no vehicles approaching, and there are no blind corners or driveways nearby. At an actual intersection I've learned to not assume that any approaching vehicles will actually stop, or that any stopped vehicles won't suddenly take off right in my path, or even that most departing vehicles won't sudden;y make a horseshoe turn and then come directly towards me after I start crossing. So no matter how awkward it is, I might just wait on a corner for a few minutes until there is full 360 degree clearance. Yes I have autism.
