Swapfiets isn't a bike rental service, it is a lifestyle choice.
You see them foogin everywhere in Netherlands. They suddenly popped up in the cities. People were wondering what these bikes with a light blue front tire were. Now FOMO gets people to crave them.

Even the concept of owning a bicycle pump to inflate tires until the desired pressure reads off the gauge and closing the presta valve afterwards is completely alien to a lot of people. I know some of them, often highly payed academics.
They are more than happy to pay for someone to do it all for them - set and forget. Swapfiets only created that product.
