Not only is it a nightmare to ride on, it's a maintenance nightmare as well. It tears up the track on curves where the wheel flanges grind against the rails. There's a reason everybody switched to bogies ages ago.
If Britian's railways weren't more fragmented than the former state of Yugoslavia, they'd have been pulled out of service ages ago for causing excess wear. The only reason they're not is because neither Network Rail or the TOCs can make the decision to do so.
