>a frame for direct mount would be extremely hard to findModifying old steel forks is how I got started with framebuilding. I wanted a set of those 'barrel' rack mounts on a fork that came without. It's fairly approachable, and if the fork crown/brake bridge is drilled w/ a center hole, you can quite easily make a jig to locate centerpull studs. The worst thing is fixing/redoing the paint.
The Dia-Compe kits are easier to assemble than the Rene Herse ones, the plate has that Mafac-style notch so it can't rotate freely, you just have to get the miter correct. You'll never hear this again, but the Rene Herse ones are cheaper (??). The last time I looked, they were $10 less/pair than the Dia-Compe ones.
DC makes brakes too; you can disassemble some of their centerpull brakes, remove the backing plate and just mount the arms on centerpull studs. DC750 is similar to Raid (long reach). I've known some people to shit on Dia-Compe, but they make sensible parts that no one else does, so I'm thankful.
