Trying to do the same journey on a weekday paints a different picture. I'm guessing pre-Covid the real average driving time would have been about 1 hour, not including the time spent on trying to find a parking space and walking from there to your actual destination.
Your 1h28min time for public transport is also very misleading, if you're able to adjust your starting time by 5 minutes you can easily find journeys below 1h 15 min. Google also tends to underestimate people's walking speeds and doesn't always give the best connections. If you know your way around New York, maybe incorporate a bicycle or scooter into your commute you can probably get that time down to about an hour.
So in the real world, both modes of transportation take around the same amount of time, except with the car journey being less reliable, less productive, more stressful and more expensive.
