More than half of the total population, and the infrastructure it depends on, emerged during that post-WWII boom, and was fundamentally based around cars as the dominant mode of transport.
I guess you've basically answered my question anyway - city centres will survive, but the suburbs are doomed, and will likely be gradually reclaimed by nature as they become unlivable.
