- the northern beaches trams were centred around Manly
- the trams north of the spit and south of the spit were built and operated by different companies
- the spit bridge itself back then was wooden with a single lane in each direction (pic related)
That last point would probably still prevent trams from crossing even today, since while there are now two lanes in each direction and the bridge is built of something more substantial than wood, it's a drawbridge. Damn thing is a horrible traffic bottleneck as it is. Governments don't want to fork out the cash to properly fix the issue by building a higher three lane per direction bridge.
