When you're driving a car, you don't normally think of the people inside of the cars around you, you just see the faceless car from the outside (unless you can actually see the driver of obviously). And then when someone in front of you is not doing what you want them to be doing — going too fast/slow, getting in your way, not turning right on red, etc etc — you just see this expressionless nonhuman machine in front of you, that is making you angry.
It makes me think of barrier frustration with dogs. The dogs aren't usually mad at each other, they're mad about the barrier blocking them from interacting. And it could be the same for people. They might not be mad at the actual person who driving, there could be a reasonable explanation behind their actions. I think they're more mad at the car centric system we have. "I could be home/at work/buying groceries/etc right now if all these stupid slow cars weren't in my way."
Who knows I'm not a psychologist. But when I visit and ride along with my mother (and when I was growing up too) she gets so god damn angry at other cars on the road. She's a decently nice person anywhere else but she's screaming at the top of her lungs just going to the damn grocery store.
