In the space of 30 years, transatlantic flights went from Zeppelins to de Havilland Comets.
There are however 2 issues. Huge diesels could have been used on piston engined aircraft, and huge aircarft to accomodate these engines did exist.
While the Bristol Brabazon was a petrol fueled aircraft, it was developed at the same time as the Comet. What's more is that the Brabazon uses 8 superchaged piston engines. Seaplanes were often of the same size, but this was the largest normal plane of its kind until the 747 was developed about a decade later.
What's more, is that jet fuel is basically kerosene. Kerosene is easier to refine than diesel.
