The purpose of a tensioner is simply to prevent your chain from slipping. Also get a narrow-wide chain ring if you want to go single-speed.
>Are there any downsides to half-link chainsIn theory the half link will always be a weak point since it works against the structural complexion of the chain. A lot of tension on the chain or repeated slapping (like from jumping) could cause the link to snap off. It's just theory though. I have no experience with them.
