your picrel is idiotic unless you have an equally big backpack on the other side.
I used to attach a large hiking backpack to my rear carrier with picrel placing It horizontally. I prefer a stiff strap to elastic cords.
I tinkered for a bit with a way to attach the frame of the backpack to the rear carrier but I found it less stable. Maybe with an external frame backpack it would be easier.
