Sometimes I fantasize about what cities would be like if we kept interstate highways at the periphery and not bulldozed through poor neighborhoods to satisfy suburban commuters.

It wasn't a slum. It was a dense, liveable, walkable, close-knit community that was thriving. The only reason they built it through their community was because they were non-white and white neighborhoods could stop.
Gentrification wasn't going to happen in the 1950s. It was decades away.

In the Twin Cities during the construction of the interstate between the downtowns they bulldozed almost all of the preeminent black neighborhood to acquire the needed right of way. There is now a block wide trench that separates the neighborhood. You can see with this map on the left side where the black neighborhood mostly was and where they placed the interstate.
I have a feeling a number of cities have made mistakes with their construction of interstates through their city.
