The LNER U1 Garratt (left) and MR Lickey Banker ('Big Bertha').
Both were one-off engines to assist trains up banks, with the U1 having the highest tractive effort of any UK steam locomotive (72,940 lbf). It was deemed surplus to requirements when the Woodhead route was electrified and was tried on the Lickey incline, where it was a failure.
The Lickey banker was successful in it's role and carried on banking after the U1 was withdrawn until it was replaced by a 9F in 1956
