Passengers are officially advised by the TSA to arrive 2 hours(!) prior to flights. Even cutting it a little closer - say, 45 mins - you're still bumping that up to 2hrs 5mins for a flight versus 2hrs 30 for a train.
the plane still wins on time in that circumstance, but for business travelers there's another consideration: How you can use that time. You get an hour on the plane, but some of that time is taken up by takeoff/climb/descent/landing, so you can't take your laptop out and work. Meanwhile for basically the entire 2hr 30min HSR journey, you can get work done.
(of course, this assumes that they can actually deliver 2hrs 30min, i just think the underlying journey is more interesting than simply comparing flight time to rail journey time.)
