I'll admit I've only ever been to Melbourne as a tourist and I hear the pub transport situation for the outer suburbs (particularly out west) can be a bit how ya goin, but getting around the inner city that's serviced by the tram network was fantastically easy and convenient, with service intervals being so frequent that you didn't really need to bother with a timetable. I've visited several times and was always impressed by the trams, I also remembered my brief experience with the trains as not being too bad although I'm sure my opinion might change if I had to ride them everyday.
It's been nearly 15 years now since I first visited Melbourne but I still remember it being one of those significant life experiences that really changed my perspective on what public transportation can be like and how cities can be built and structured.
Shame it's full of wankers but you can't have everything.
