>>1429300I cant say Ive ever biked in sub zero temperatures,
but I have repaired some freewheels, the normal cause of their failure is too much grime accumulating in the flats of the ratchet body.
for when its cold I can only think that the pivot point of the paul's have become bound by the lucubration medium increasing in viscosity,
or that there is not enough oil in the mechanism to prevent water ingress, and ice has formed in the gap caused by the shrinkage of the bearing pin.
I recommend disassembly and cleaning along with applying a more temperature stable lubricant - jojoba oil - or Molybdenum Disulfide Grease,
and some hydrophobic coating near bearings to try and keep water from entering into contact with lubricated surfaces.
free hubs have a system with much larger ratchet teeth and pauls, so maybe this is less of a problem,
there is only one way to find out, just bear in mind that free hubs are more integral to the wheel can can be tricky to dissemble
