Surely these people will soon realise just how much better road bikes are. Dunno man, all of my road bike friends have n+1'd after taking a spin on one of my wide-tire do-it-all bikes.
Gotta-go-fast road bikes have their place but 35-45mm tires are C O M F Y
(Also, you can fit 35mm tires under some dual-pivot road calipers, and if you want to go wider but are philosophically opposed to using modern brakes for some godforsaken reason, there's nothing wrong with canti brakes)
