>>1746795When a bridge expands, effectively a second bridge is built next to it complete with its own independent supports and columns, it just doesn't have any barriers that separate the old parts from the new and is simply just bolted together and resurfaced. This is a section of overpass that was expanded, the old being on the right (and getting new paint and texturing) from the mid-1980s and the new being from the early-2010s. You can see that the support columns are all different underneath despite the attempt at making them similar.
