I wouldn't be so concerned with weight for a beater, but this is going to be a fast gravel trail bike like my rocky mtn, which is a higher spec bike, but older, and with a quill stem. I'm curious which will ride better. The threadless stem should make a difference.
This 96/95 year is a sweet spot in age, it's the last year when the high end chromoly bikes still came with rigid forks. In 97 everything up from bear valley had a suspension fork. In 94, everything had quill stems.
Quill stems look cool though, especially the canti stop.
