In 2021 I rode Finland's Santa Claus express overnight service from Helsinki to Rovaniemi and back. It was one of the best deals I've gotten. I think I paid about 150 euros round trip, but I also had a eurail/interrail pass at the time, so that price is about half the normal cost. On the other hand, because it was during covid, I had to reserve the whole cabin, and sharing was not possible. When I checked just now, it looks like it's 99 euros each way (12 hours overnight) for a private cabin, which is an amazing deal. Anyway, I had two super comfy bunks in a private cabin to myself, and slept in the lower one. You can pay more for a cabin with its own toilet and shower but I was on a student budget so nah. The ride was so smooth, and Finland is beautiful, and it's a really terrific service. I kept one of their VR branded hand towels and still use it as my travel towel. 100% recommend. On the other hand, a single bed in a shared compartment from Cologne to Zürich (only 9 hours) costs more than the 12 hour trip in a private cabin in Finland, and a private cabin on the NightJet would run you about 1000 euros. Go figure. Pic related (not mine but identical).
