they're underrated for riding on city streets, on a nice fixed gear bike (stiff, lightweight, aerodynamic, low rolling resistance etc) you can go faster than most people would ever hope to go on a bicycle, the inefficiency due to being in the "wrong" gear is less than you think as the optimal cadence increases the more watts you put out, you'll be faster overall than on any internal gear hub bike, you can see it in videos like >>1564317, fixed gear riders easily ride faster than most normal cyclists other than competitive road cyclists

yeah on longer rides where you're cruising at lower wattages you might prefer an 80 rpm cadence or something like that
but like if you're doing shorter rides in a flat city and can only do 40+ km/h in short bursts, a singlespeed setup really isn't looking that bad at all imo
you can handle mild climbs without issue as well because it's normal to have a lower cadence on the climbs
