I think this shop in NOLA is the only place I would go to have service done. It's open garage with a pile of beat bikes in one corner, about a dozen refurbished bikes for sale in the other corner going for about $40-$80 a pop, and a open workspace in the back with a fridge for beer.
They fix flats for $8 (tube included) and fix anything else for dirt cheap using parts pulled off other bikes. I work on any bikes that I really care about myself, so I would only go there with trash I'm riding around because it's the city and I don't care. It is cheap, convenient and easier than doing it yourself. More shops need to realize the way to get consistent clients (outside of rich, idiot Freds) is make it easier and cheaper than doing it yourself.
