I paid $150 for a mid to low end record ace that was fixed up (i overpaid) but it was a trooper bike. Eventually i bent the rims in a gutter and everything went to shit after that. But i still have the bike! It served me well for ~2 years.
Basically, do your research and know that most bikes are overpriced. You can learn to replace brake and shift cables as well as brake pads and tires on your own easy, so you could save money there. A shift/brake cable kit by schwinn is ~8 bucks and you can buy tires at ~50 a pair for cheap ones. Just have to balance costs, do you wanna pay now or later?
