>OPs trying to say:Look, if you didn't only thought of a *city* as a downtown with 8 lanes for a *street* and the living areas as single story suburban houses, it would actually be possible to live in a small area, small enough that you could walk to 70k people from parking lots outside the city, or for metro to make sense. If you build two metro lines here, one N/S and one E/W you'll cover 50% of the whole comercial district with each line. 50% of services, 50% of shops and 50% of leassuire. And the change to the other line covers the rest.
This is why a metro also works briliantly in Europe. You take the line near your suburban house, into the city that's only 20 minutes mac as people live closer. And bam, at you stop, you got all the city.
Of course metros suck if you have to take a "metro" for an fucking hour like an regional train, only to be dropped of in a city, where' you have to get a cab or change between 20 busses to finally get within walking distance of your destination..
