For flat bar cable mech makes zero sense unless you happen to have some cool parts for it around or just like experimenting. Hydraulics are simply too good value. I honestly see myself buying a new set of cantilevers before a cable actuated caliper.
For road bikes it's a bit different story since most of the single pot calipers suck dick and the hoods only geometry forces a suboptimal angle on the lever. Cable actuated calipers aren't that much worse than the regular hydraulic road calipers, same goes for rimjobs. The Hope RX4 is a different story though, I bought these and literally first time I've enjoyed braking from hoods.
