I generally cross busy roads at traffic lights. Next road over has lights but its a bit of a death trap between a blind curve, apartments and mall traffic.
I hate wide roads with multiple lanes of traffic in each direction. Can be difficult getting a gap in traffic from both directions in order to cross whole road. Half the time someone slows to a crawl or stops, compressing traffic eliminating the gap I was aiming for. Drivers are too unpredictable to go half way across without ending up in a dangerous situation. ie: stop in one lane, blocking my view of other lane while traffic in other lane doesn't stop.
So my sneak technique gives me a safe place to wait while waiting for chance to cross first half, then a median protected left turn lane to wait for gap in traffic on second half of road.
Drivers illegally trying to yield their right of way to me drives me fucking nuts. Its completely retarded, and delays cyclists more than if they hadn't stopped. 95% of the time I wave them past which seems to piss them off for some reason.
