Maybe it's because my work took me all over the place, but I learned to travel extra light.
All I need is water, one spare set of clothes with extra underwear, a minimalist toolkit and spares, waterproof poncho, knife, tent, minimalist camping gear and it all fits in my burly trailer, I have a traingle frame bag, a saddle pouch and a handlebar bag too but that's it, no panniers, no front or rear rack and no backpabk.
I carry some camo netting with me, it's light as fuck and makes the trailer almost invisible if I stash it in some bushes, so I tand to leave it where I'm going to camp for the night and then I just take my valuables and essentials with me on the bike to explore.
It's by far the best way to go for me, fuck overloading the bike, drag your shit behind you and whenever you want to explore just unhitch and hide your stuff, takes like 30 seconds.
I worked it out too, my mates rig which includes front and rear racks, and all the panniers etc weighs 1.5 KG more than the trailer.
