>>1231535I'm a broke as fuck college student abroad. I got no job yet and my budget doesn't allow me to go take my bike in to get this done at a shop. Figured it was easy peasy and I could do it myself, but I've run into a bit of a problem and I was hoping maybe you fags could help me out a bit, oh great bike masters of /n/.
I have an old, maybe '90s Miyata road bike. It's super light, it's served me well so far and I love it. But I want to replace its shitty hub nuts with quick release levers. I got some old ones like in pic related, and figured I could just take the wheels off, swap out the hub screw thing and put it back together again. Turns out I'm thoroughly incorrect. So here's my main concerns:
>New hub screw thing fits into the wheel, but is slightly bigger than the old one. As a result, the crowned nut thing that's holding in the bearings doesn't fit and I can't reuse it. Do I NEED to find a replacement for it or can I just skip out on the bearings part? >The new hub screw part, being slightly bigger than the original one, does not fit into the dropouts. Can I just file them down? Will this compromise the bike frame in any way? (I already filed them down a bit with my leatherman, but it's not enough it seems) >It seems like the fork is kinda wide, and the new hub screw thing is just a tiny bit short compared to the older one. I made sure that it is indeed the correct one for that wheel. After thinking about it in bed last night, I had a moment where I realized I have no idea how wheels work, so I figured I'd ask with you guys before continuing to disfigure my bike any further. Appreciate it!
