1x is awesome. No need to worry about an FD, and the rings I used held the chain well without a need for a keeper or guide. Add some hydro discs and run a friction shifter for the rear to get a low maintenance reliable commuter.
The downside from my experience is you will be replacing your cassette, chain, and 1x ring every spring. 1x rings and chinesium is an issue. Left is 1500 miles of snow/salt riding. Right was 1000 miles of fair weather riding. I had a spare fd and 3x to swap to. 22x34 is billy goat territory.
