I think the old mountain bikes are great because they are cheap to buy, maintain and can be specced to do whatever you want with them. Enough clearance for MTB tires, low enough geometry to be a good road bike and sturdy enough for touring. Also they are much cooler than a modern hybrid equivalent with 650b wheels.
Hydraulic discs are nice though! Just the fact that you can swap in 700c for road riding and 26 to trail riding. Not that you need to, but road bike tires are pretty nice for long rides. Wish it was a more common practice to weld tabs on, but that also goes to show that people are very satisfied with rim brakes. I am too.
