>>1518325Lines 9 and 10 of the Barcelona metro, an oversized project (dubbed as "the longest subway line in Europe"), which started construction in 2003. Automatic lines, built using several tunnel boring machines with one track on top of the other for most of the route. Many of the stations are built in 50-meter deep shafts that use several huge elevators to move passengers between the platforms and the surface (the huge depth of the line was conditioned by the sinkholes and collapses caused by the construction of previous subway lines in the city). The Catalan government ran out of money during the 2008 financial crisis and the project had to be stopped. The portions on both sides of the line are currently operational, with the central portion still to be completed - it crosses the more heavily-populated central area of Barcelona.
After nearly 10 years of paralyzed construction, we are hoping to secure a loan of the European Investment Bank to finally resume the works and complete the line (several stations have been postponed indefinitely)
