That's not true either. Listening to music while riding can help you stay alert and focused. It is common advice to listen to music on long drives for the same reason. The reason not to listen to music while cycling is not because it distracts you but because it blocks out other sound. Primarily, if a car is coming from behind. Drivers do not need to listen for that, because they drive predictably and do not need to correct their driving when a car approaches. A cyclist riding liesurely on a quiet road might beniefit from it, but a skilled cyclist holding their line doesn't have any corrections to make either, there's not much they can do to avoid being hit from behind and it is not smart to be anxious about every overtake.
I think the best reason to not listen to music on a bike is so you can hear your own bicycle. There are all kinds of small auditory clues that help you ride a bicycle, to do with shifting, maintenance, if something is stuck in your drivetrain and if something is going to go horribly wrong. I like listening to music when i ride though.
