it is so easy, same standard for both road and mtb for the last 20 years, get 9-speed sora brifters + 52/39 cranks, and older 9-speed deore (or modern acera) shifter and wide range casette, and they just work together, seamlessly, like they were meant to be together all along
or, if you're cheap and nasty, you can get chink microshit and get a subpar but functional experience because all those microshits, ltwoons and the rest are explicitly shimano-compatible
but now? they finally have an excuse to kill off their old sis range (maybe they'll keep plastic 7-speed tourney), to be replaced with new shit of higher cost, lower quality and with no upcycling
got a bike on essa drivetrain but want something beefier? good boy, buy the entire fucking drivetrain, nothing's compatible for a level up, neither new parts, old parts or chinese parts
