Bike brands and names do not work like that. All the big manufacturers make a tonne of low end junk and most of the big box garbage brands used to be legit real companies that made good bikes and then just sold their names to some taiwanese conglomerate.
You might only know Mongoose through wallmart but they made a lot of highly desirable bikes back in the day.
Same thing with Schwinn. Your oldschool Schwinn is basically what morphed into Waterford/Gunnar. They made a fuckload of really nice bikes.
Same thing with Motobecane. Legit french mfg.
Prestigious brands were bought/used to give a glossy sheen to junk so avoiding those names now when looking on the used market at old bikes makes zero fucking sense.
