I live in a turn of the century suburb in an Australian city, in a house built around 1900. These people pre-car certainly knew how to build decent suburbs. The streets are laid out in a reasonably pleasing way and almost everything you need is nearby. Public transport (both bus and train), grocery store, schools, post office, pharmacists, take-aways, barber, churches, public parks, etc. are all within walking distance.
It's not perfect, of course. The grocery store is only small and has a limited inventory, so the big shop for a family of 4 still requires me to make the short 5 minute drive to a bigger nearby supermarket but it's still pretty top tier for immediate essentials.
