That kilo I would not recommend. When it rains, those streets are nasty with grime. I would want something that could take fenders and fatter tires.
The handlebars are questionable too. Drop bars with cross levers... not good for riding in traffic
The guys you see riding fixies in NYC are experienced riders or dangerous idiots, imho
If you have to go with bikesdirect because of your budget, I would get the 7 speed swift here:
