To their credit though, some architects did attempt to integrate their creations into the streetscape by adding storefronts (pic related).

Modernist monstrosities like the Empire State Plaza also serve their function well (you want office space? you got office space) but much like the old churches, they were designed as comically large status symbols rather than something that would integrate into the existing landscape. Churches are in many cases the embodiment of buildings being designed as art pieces rather than as consumer products.
