when commuting i use pic related through the rear wheel and seat tube on whatever bike rack or structural bars fit the bill.
i can take the L on my commuter bike, but my mountain bikes stay under my feet or chained up in the basement like a mutant sibling at all times.
Basically you just have to accept that there is risk involved in owning bicycles and take whatever steps you deem appropriate to mitigate those risks.
