Haven't rode MTB since my teen years, but I'm in my GF's hometown and she was busy all day so I rented pic related to check out the XC trails here, which have a good reputation.
>Start off on the marked trails, getting a feel for the bike and warming up
>Begin to feel confident handling the bike, having fun
>See some cheeky unmarked trails on the other side of the river
>Decide to go for it
>Trails are really fun, but clearly seldom ridden
>Get bretty deep, single track becomes very narrow
>Eventually come to a more open area clearly used for bush parties, lots of trash and broken glass
>Begin to wonder if I'm trespassing
>Hear gruff old man's voice from somewhere in the woods
>"For fucks sakes... Go get him boy"
>Hear dog barrelling through the woods
>Do a 360 and bike away
>I go full Jenny Rissveds and fly through the trails back where I came
>Cross the river back to the marked side safely, ride around for a bit more
>Get home and check Strava, I somehow have three Top 5 segments
>I can't even do that on the road
Overall, a good time. Would rent again
